The Thread of Fire: AURA’s Approach to Wick Selection
Written by Linda Pendrey, Chandler | Designer
In candle making, the wick is often underestimated, but it is the key to how a candle burns, how fragrance fills a room, and how the overall experience unfolds. At AURA Candle Bar, wick selection is not a small detail; it is the foundation of performance.
Every candle begins with a vessel, but it is the wick chosen with precision and tested with care that determines the flame’s steadiness, the fragrance’s release, and the quality of the burn.
The Anatomy of a Perfect Burn
To the untrained eye, all wicks may look alike. To our chandlers, each is an instrument with specific qualities - diameter, braid, core, and coating - that must align with wax type, fragrance load, and vessel design. At AURA, we select wicks based on:
-
Vessel Diameter & Depth – A narrow glass requires a fine wick, while a wide ceramic may need multiple wicks for even burn.
-
Wax Composition – Our coconut-apricot wax has a slow, creamy melt and requires wicks with superior capillary action.
-
Fragrance Load & Complexity – Some oils need stronger flames to release aroma effectively, while others require more restraint.
-
Vessel Material – Glass cools quickly, ceramic holds heat, and metal reflects—each changes how the wick performs.
The Process of Testing
No wick is chosen without thorough testing. Each vessel goes through multiple burn trials, where we measure:
-
Melt Pool Depth – Even, without tunneling.
-
Flame Behavior – Steady, centered, minimal flicker.
-
Soot & Mushrooming – None; purity is essential.
-
Fragrance Throw – Balanced and consistent.
Adjustments are made as needed, whether trimming a wick, centering it differently, or rebalancing the fragrance blend.
Materials That Matter
Our wicks are sourced from São Vitor, a world-class manufacturer trusted by chandlers for performance and purity. Made of tightly woven, specially treated cotton, they deliver:
-
Lead & Zinc-Free Combustion – Only natural cotton fibers.
-
High-Temperature Capability – Compatible with slow-melting coconut-apricot wax.
-
Clean, Slow Burn – Minimal soot, preserving fragrance integrity.
AURA’s Standard
At AURA, every candle is the result of careful balance - between wick and wax, vessel and fragrance, heat and harmony. With over 110 fragrances curated from around the globe, it is the wick that ensures each one shines at its best.
This is not just candle making, this is AURA’s quiet mastery.
